Kearney Police Department Youth Citizens Academy

The Kearney Police Department is proud to present a free, interactive, and hands-on course designed to provide teens with a chance to learn about the day to day duties of a Kearney Police Officer. The purpose of the academy is to increase understanding of how local law enforcement works and to educate community youth in the everyday activities that a Kearney Police Officer has to perform. If you have thought about a career in a criminal justice field or just curious to know what it’s like being a police officer, then this is the program to be in.

This will be a 5-week academy. Classes will be held Thursday evenings from 6:00pm-9:00pm, starting May 28th through June 25th. This will include learning basic law enforcement techniques, search and seizure (4th Amendment), drug and alcohol investigations, crime scene investigations, ESU(SWAT) call outs, K-9 procedures, etc.

Applications will be accepted from February, 2026 and go through May, 2026. The Academy is available to high school and middle school students ages 14-18.    Applications may be picked up at the Kearney Law Enforcement Center, Kearney High School, or found on the City of Kearney website.   Applications can be returned to the Kearney Police Department, 2025 A Avenue, or emailed to Officer Nate Dennis.
