ISO Rating

The City of Kearney currently has an ISO rating of 2, reflecting the strength and effectiveness of its fire protection services. ISO ratings range from 1 to 10, with 1 being the best. Evaluations occur every five years and assess three primary areas:

Fire Service – Training, staffing, and equipment of firefighters

Dispatch – Emergency communications and response coordination

Water Supply – Availability and reliability of water for firefighting

A lower ISO rating can benefit homeowners by potentially reducing insurance premiums, as it demonstrates strong community fire protection. Kearney’s high rating reflects the dedication of both volunteer and career firefighters and the City’s commitment to keeping residents safe.

The Suburban Fire Protection District #1 of Buffalo & Kearney Counties, which covers the areas outside the city limits, has an ISO rating of 3/3Y. The “Y” designation indicates that some parts of the district lack nearby fire hydrants, which can affect response and water supply during a fire. Despite this, the district maintains strong protection thanks to trained firefighters, positive relationships with local land owners and strategic equipment placement.
