[ARCHIVED] Carl Sandburg as Folklorist with Kate Benzel and Mike Adams

Tuesday, January 13, at 1:00 p.m. Senior College of Central Nebraska and the Kearney Public Library will host two entertaining and informative sessions focusing on Carl Sandburg.

Probably no other 20th Century American writer exemplifies “folklorist” than Carl Sandburg - Poet of the People. Sandburg was a poet, essayist, newspaper reporter, singer, songwriter, orator, biographer, performer, and storyteller. In all his presentations he spoke to the people about the people and records of American history and culture.

• The session at 1:00 p.m. will feature, Kate Benzel – a Carl Sandburg scholar - speaking about Carl Sandburg as a folklorist using Sandburg’s 1936 book “The People, Yes” (1936).
• The second session at 3:00 p.m. will feature, Mike Adams - songwriter and musician – discussing and performing a variety of songs from Sandburg’s compilation of American folk songs – “The American Songbag” (1927) - that speak “the hearts and voices of thousands of men and women”.

Both sessions will be at the Kearney Public Library in the Niobrara Room. This special Senior College presentation is open to the public free of charge. No reservations are necessary.
