Banned Books Week (Adult)
Celebrate your freedom to read and check out a challenged book from our display — all month long! We are also having a coloring contest with a random drawing for prizes. Pick up a sheet in the library or print one from home (https://cityofkearney.org/DocumentCenter/View/36200/Banned-Books-2021-Coloring-Sheet). Return your entry to the library by September 30 at 9:00 pm for a chance to win!
Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. The theme for 2021 is "Books Unite Us." It spotlights current and historical attempts to censor books in libraries and schools. It brings together the entire book community - librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types - in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.
Books featured during this week have all been targeted for removal or restriction in libraries and schools. By focusing on efforts across the country to remove or restrict access to books, Banned Books Week draws national attention to the harms of censorship.
