Snow Emergency
Our Objective
The Public Works Department strives is to provide a plan for safe and orderly movement of emergency equipment, vehicle traffic, and pedestrians throughout the city during adverse weather conditions. A snow and ice control plan has been developed to facilitate this objective. The City’s policy is to provide maximum service on major arterial streets and collector roads comprising the basic street network needed to safely and orderly move the majority of the city’s traffic.

Our Priorities
All of the following procedures are dependent on wind and other weather related factors:
  • Priority for snow and ice control is given to the designated snow route system.
  • When snow exceeds 4 inches, residential plowing will commence after the completion of the snow route. Clearance of snow from residential streets normally takes 18-24 hours.
  • Special equipment is used to plow cul-de-sacs and dead-ends.
  • Snow removal in alleys is a low priority. Plowing is performed in alleys when conditions warrant.

How You Can Help
  • Park vehicles off the street during snow removal operations. City ordinance prohibits the parking of vehicles on an Emergency Snow Route.
  • A ridge of snow will be left at the end of your driveway and curb sidewalks from our plowing equipment. It is the responsibility of the property owner to remove the snow left by our equipment.
  • Keep sidewalks clear of snow and ice.
  • Do NOT throw the snow from your driveway into the street.
  • Stay clear of sand trucks at least 100 feet when driving.
